Google is constantly evolving their methods through their infamous algorithm, and this time around in their March 2018 update, there’s a lot to cover. We’re here to answer any and all of your SEO questions, including a breakdown of this Google update and what it means for you and your business.
Did your website’s ranking plummet overnight? Did it spike up, and you don’t know why? That’s just an adverse effect of their updates that take place “several times per year,’ and there’s nothing that can truly be done to fix or alter the effects. With a constantly-changing algorithm, there is always a slew of updated that don’t gain the favor of the public (or SEO companies, like us), but that’s where creativity comes in to work around the negatives. With this, unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done immediately to “fix” your site; it’s all about continuing your strategy following their current guidelines, and ascending your site rank through means that still work.
Google shared this on Twitter regarding this portion of their update:
“Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year.
“As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded.
“There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.’
Not the best news out there, but something that just goes to show the importance of content marketing and putting your quality above all else.
This one comes straight from the source. At 51Blocks, we don’t roll out posts about updated if they haven’t been confirmed by Google. If you came here after reading a bit about their new update, you’ve probably seen a lot of speculative information. What we know right now is this - the long-term effect of this core update is positive.
While it may sound like your pages going up or down in ranking is negative towards consistency with Google, it brings with it a fight for the underdog. Web pages that have previously done everything right yet didn’t see these effects in their SEO strategy, site traffic or otherwise, are getting an even playing field.
Basing this off of previous experiences surrounding Google updates, we can say this: the hype is always stronger than the effect. If you’ve been scanning the news pages for all the information on this update, you’re not alone, but it’s bound to provide a little bit of information overload.
Google has remained the top search engine for multiple reasons. For one, they are calculated thinkers. They understand the behind-the-scenes, long-term effects this is going to have more than anybody else. Overall, their updates have been healthy, albeit a bit frustrating to get used to.
With every Google update, there’s going to be some form of a recovery period before everything evens out again. Certain aspects of SEO are always going to be persistent, such as backlinks, website speed, and most of all, great quality content. Producing noteworthy, readable information that search engine users actually want to read is a vital component to your SEO strategy.
Google updates can take your well-recognized page and turn it upside-down, or vice versa. That’s why your SEO team has to be up to the challenge for every possible twist, turn, and dreaded update. Following Google’s daily changes and larger, core updates are a lengthy task in and of itself. Knowing how to make these updates work for you is the key.
So what does all of this really mean for you? It’s another Google update, and another challenge for your SEO team to overcome. With any Google update, there’s a lot to go over, assess, and new information that needs to be shared and understood. Sounds like a lot of work? It is.
