The History of White Label Services

White label services didn’t start out exclusively with digital marketing, even though that term is widely associated with it today. White label services have been utilized throughout history (although, there’s not a lot of press because, well, they’re white label). Let’s jump right into it and explain a bit of the history surrounding white label marketing, in multiple platforms. White labeling is difficult to pinpoint on a timeline, so we’re going to use events to help ground yourself in the history of white label.

Use In Generic Products for Years

Ever gone into WalMart and seen a product on the shelf under their brand name, “Greater Value”? Sure you have. That’s a living embodiment of modern-day white label marketing. You know the brand, you know that they’re going to provide you with a better cost, while still being reliable, so you decide to use that product.

But that product isn’t actually manufactured by Wal Mart; just their brand. It’s the same as when a large corporation purchases a competitor but keeps their name and logo information. They’re now peddling their own products (in most cases), but through a different label. In a sense, it’s the same story.

Used In Computer Monitor Manufacturing By a Brand You Know

Dell has been using alternate manufacturers and slapping their logo on the monitors for years. It’s just another instance of white label practice: they can’t be expected to manufacture those many monitors while still turning over a profit.

Dell actually represents the core value that you don’t need to have an entire army of workers, you just need to look like you do – all the power with rock bottom costs, while still focusing on quality.

Call Centers (The Least Surprising on the List)

When you phone into customer support, you go through a “level one” company that’s outsourced to deal with minor issues facing consumers. This is perhaps the most consistent and recognizable form of white labeling, done in a very unique way.

Call centers designate X employees for X hours a day to handle one company’s calls and customer service issues, with the ability to patch them through to the centrally-located, more adept team of customer service representatives when problems are too intricate to handle.

How Does White Labeling Digital Marketing Work in Today’s Landscape?

White label services are the backbone of an effective SEO strategy for any company. Few can afford in-house SEO teams, designers, writers, and more, so what do they do? They find the perfect white label partnership for them, and utilize their expertise and proficiency in the space, and maximize their return.

We’ve been a white label services provider for countless years. With that, you move with the flow, and watch the way that white label changes throughout the years – well, that would be if it had changed at all.

Different services become white labeled, but the principle has always been the same: our product, your name, giving you the ability to cut costs, stress, time, and take a nearly hands-free approach with your clients.
