What are Niche Citations and Why Do They Matter?

If you’ve been looking into local SEO to boost your local Google search rankings, you may have come across the phrase “niche citations.” Also called local citations, a niche citation is a way to name-drop your business on websites as a way to generate or boost local traffic. Niche citations can include virtually any information pertaining to your company, but almost always feature some combination of the following:

  • Company Name
  • Company Address/Cross Streets
  • Company Phone Number
  • Company Website
  • City/State

A good niche citation should at least include what is known as the NAP (Name, Address, Phone), but can also be called an NAPW (Name, Address, Phone, Website) or UNAP (URL, Name, Address, Phone) if your website address is included. Citations that don’t at least contain the NAP are considered “partial citations” and can still be valuable as long as it’s mentioning your company’s name. Niche citations can be placed within the content of any website that pertains to your company’s purpose- for example, if you sell organic pet food, you may wish to consider niche citations in sites for a few local pet stores, health food stores and lifestyle blogs devoted to wellness or pet ownership.

Niche citations can be a great way to get your company’s name and information out there so local clients can know you exist. People who see your niche citation on another local website tend to view it as an endorsement for your company, and may be more likely to visit your site than if there was just a posted link back to your landing page. In fact, a citation does not have to link back to your website at all in order to add value. On the contrary, one school of thought surrounding niche citations is that some users prefer a more natural mention of a company than a link, as it comes across as more informational and less “salesy.” That said, niche citations featuring links to your website are generally seen as more profitable than partial citations that do not link back to your landing page. Adding niche citations to local websites can help boost your organic traffic without seeming as though it’s trying to get anybody to buy anything- something consumers certainly appreciate when they feel they are bombarded by advertising all day long!
